English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)


English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)These programs are for students whose native, or home, language is other than English. ESOL classes are available for students who don't speak English or have limited skills in reading, writing, and speaking English. Students are pre-tested to determine their ability and begin their studies at that level.

Program of Study

  1. Literacy Skills for Adult ESOL Learners provides English language and literacy instruction to limited English proficient adults who are pre-literate, non-literate or semi- literate in their home language in order to increase their ability to communicate in English.
     
  2. Adult ESOL is designed for limited English proficient students 16 years of age or older who wish to improve English language skills to increase their ability to communicate in English for a variety of purposes including employment, higher education, and for life in the U.S. as parents and community members.
     
  3. Adult ESOL College and Career Readiness (formerly Academic Skills) is designed to improve the advanced ESOL students’ ability to communicate in English, and allow them to acquire secondary level English language skills. The curriculum for this course concentrates on the following: Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Understanding Speaking & Listening, Writing, Grammar Usage, Use of Technology, and College & Career Planning.  
  4. English Literacy for Career and Technical Education (ELCATE) is for students intending to enroll in technical education program. The content includes English language acquisition and skills applicable to workforce education and career/ technical programs.

  5. Citizenship is designed to prepare eligible permanent residents to successfully complete the process of becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen.  The course has three parts: Part I: The Naturalization Pre-Interview Part II: The Naturalization Interview and the Civics, Speaking, Reading, and Writing components of the Naturalization Test Part III: The Naturalization Post-Interview.
