About Major Appliance and Refrigeration Technician

Students in the Major Appliance and Refrigeration Technician program will get the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits to pursue an entry level position as an appliance repair technician. The program concentrates on the necessary service and repair of major residential appliances.

Students will receive hands-on practical experience in repairing household and commercial appliances. Appliances are becoming more complex and ‘smart’ as they become integrated with the ‘smart’ home movement; hence, they will require technicians with specialized appliance repair training. Employment and opportunity growth will remain strong into the future as the demand for high-end appliances is growing. This also includes training as an Appliance Installation Helper, Laundry Technician, Cooking Appliance Technician and Cooling Appliance Technician.

Program of study

The program is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of four occupational completion points (OCPs), linked to employment opportunities established by the Florida Department of Education based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. Academic skill level required to complete the program: Grade 9 language, math, and reading.

Near completion of the program, students take the following certification exams:

• Graduate Certified Appliance Technician (G-CAP)
• Professional Servicer Association (PSA)

Articulation of college credits

On successful completion, students enrolling in an A.S. degree program are eligible for articulated credits at Valencia College:

• Supervision & Management for Industry A.S. degree, up to 27 credits

• Basic Skills Requirement: CASAS Reading Goals 2 and CASAS Math Goals 2

Basic Skills Exemption

Students may provide one of the following:

• Official college transcript showing a degree earned
• Official State of Florida public high school transcript (2007 or after)
• Official documentation of a passing score on a state-approved industry certification or licensure exam related to the program of study
• Official concordant test scores no more than 2 years old (PERT, GED®, SAT, ACT, WBST, Accuplacer)
• Active-duty military status
